URGENT NOTICE - July Progress Day

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Hello everyone; sorry to interrupt your enjoyment of this continued lovely weather, but I have a rather important update for you all regarding our Summer Progress Day which was scheduled for 26th July 2009.

No doubt you are all already aware of the busy month ahead which accommodates our Open Breed Show on the 11th July and the WALCS Rally on with 19th July; both of which take a considerable amount of time to organise from both club members and committee members.  We are also at the onset of the summer holidays as the children break up from school and many of us will be jetting off to sunnier climates (or not, if this weather keeps up!).

To this end, the Committee have made a decision to rearrange our Events Calendar for this year, and the Summer Progress Day will now take place on Sunday 6th September in place of our Inter Branch Fun Day.  The Phil Denton Trophy Event and the October Open Obedience Show will remain unaffected by the reschedule of events (20th Sept and 4th October respectively).

I will contact all current trophy holders early/mid August asking for the timely return of the same so that we can commence planning around this revised date.

This extension does provide those who have struggled to accommodate 6 attendances since our last Progress Day (15th March) to increase their record with a view to participating, so we look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible over the summer period to work on those sloppy sits. excitable recalls and lazy heelwork in perparation.

If anyone has any queries about this (or any other) issue, please dont hesitate to give me a call.

Thanks,
Rebecca

KC Good Citizen Scheme

KENNEL CLUB GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME - NOTICE

BAGSD Huddersfield has for some time supported the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme.  This national Scheme for all dogs and their owners is designed to train dogs and their handlers how to become ‘Good Citizens’.  It is the largest National Dog Training Programme in the UK with over 52,000 dogs and their handlers already achieving the Bronze Award.  There is no age limit on either dog or owner, but generally dogs must have completed their vaccination programme to take part.

The scheme starts with the Puppy Foundation Award and progresses through Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

Whilst the Puppy Foundation Award is assessed on the puppy owner’s attendance at training classes with no test environment being necessary, the following Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards are all conducted on a test basis; although we must point out that the scheme is not competitive.

The range of requirements for Bronze, Silver and Gold increase in number and complexity throughout the 3 Awards.  When the required standard for each level has been achieved, a rosette and certificate will be issued to the dog and owner.  An outline of what is expected at the initial Bronze stage follows:

The Scheme aims to produce a dog that will walk and sit in a controlled manner on the lead, lie down on command, will allow its owner to clean and groom it and inspect it.  The dog must also be able to be positioned by its owner for examination, ie stand, sit, lie down on either side or on its back, all on a lead.  Finally, the dog must come when called.

  1. Cleanliness and identification
  2. Collar and Lead
  3. Walk on Lead
  4. Control at door/gate
  5. Controlled walk through people and dogs
  6. Stay down on lead
  7. Groom
  8. Present for Examination
  9. Return to Handler
  10. Responsibility and Care

It is our intention to reintroduce training specific to the Good Citizen Award Scheme following tea/coffee break each Sunday afternoon.  In order to assess the numbers and allocate resource all interested parties are invited to put their details on the accompanying list, and to advise any Committee Member of their interest in participating.

Further details of each Award Scheme can be obtained from our Chairperson, Peggy Godley or Branch Secretary, Rebecca Weston. Thank you for taking the time to read this notice.

Newsletter Spring 2009

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Well, the last 3 months have flown by and we find ourselves ready to release our second publication to you all, packed with updates and results from recent shows, progress days and events, along with a whole host of other items including a pretty busy newcomers section and our new classified section.

We hope that you will enjoy reading about the progress being made at your club, and as always, any items that you feel maybe suitable for inclusion in the next edition (due Sept 2009) should be sent to myself for review.

We hope to see many of you down on the field each Sunday taking advantage of the recent lovely warm and dry spell; as its the only offering we can make to counter balance those cold, wet ones we have to endure through the Autumn and Winter!  We have another progress day looming in July, so those wishing to participate should ensure that they attend at least 6 sessions beforehand in order to qualify.  And to help those aiming for Elementary status this time, have a look here for details of what is expected of your dog and you as the handler, on the day.

Wishing you all the best for the summer season and extending our thanks on behalf of all Committee Members for your continued support at the club.

Rebecca Weston - Branch Secretary
