Phil Denton Trophy

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

The long overdue return of our The Phil Denton Event took place on Sunday, 20th September, enhanced by a lovely bright sunny day and equally lovely atmosphere. The dogs took part in a combination of obedience both on and off the lead, stays, drop on recall in the box, retrieve over the wall and finishing off with a little jog around the agility course.

It was visibly clear that all entrants had been working and training hard for this event, and we would like to thank Kevin Horn for devoting part of his class each week to the development of the dogs. As always, there can only be one winner, and the results are detailed below:
1st - Andrew Mortimer with Kimi

2nd - Mark Fretwell with Schui
3rd - John Hicks with Mac
4th – Dawn Sutcliffe with Zeus
5th – Sue Spivey with Tammy
6th – Gary Pinder with Roxie
7th – Kevin Horn with Mitch
8th – Ann Horn with Mitch

Well Done to all who took part; all entrants receive a Rosette and Andrew wins the rather impressive looking Phil Denton trophy for a year until its time to return it for the 2010 event. The event will be promoted throughout the summer next year allowing everyone plenty of time to train their dog to the standard required for participation - get your name down as soon as you can!

(Remember that your dog must be at least 18 months old due to the advanced nature of the agility requirements).

BAGSD Hudds. Display Team

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

BAGSD Huddersfield had the recent great honour of being asked to produce a display team and routine to present at the ‘Bark in the Park’ at Ravensknowle Park, Huddersfield. It was a great pleasure and a really lovely day, with beautiful weather and record attendances, for all involved and for everyone who came along with their four legged friends.

Display Team

Display Team

BAGSD members (Ann Horn with Mitch, Dawn Sutcliffe with Zeus, Gary Pinder with Roxie, Jayne Murphy with Saxon, Jo Askham with Kora, Karol Ramsden with Quin, Lynda Gibson with Petra, Lisa Washington with Zeus, Sara Latham with Bear, and a lovely selection of our pups) were directed by Kevin Horn and Peggy Godley on the day after weeks of preparation time in producing a fine display. Don’t they look good?

A demonstration of the skills and abilities of all our dogs was shown with elements of heel work, down and sits, stays, scent work, retrieve, recalls, distance control, puppy guidance, and a fun element of find the dumb-bell under the bucket involving a member of the audience. Kevin gave the group a really eye-catching display showing just how we here at BAGSD can train our dogs and how intelligent they are.

Thank you Kevin for your input and of course to all who put the extra training times in. Also thank you’s are extended to Peggy’s Husband Stephen for assisting on the day with the commentary of what was being displayed to the crowd and by whom and their dog. We really did show them that BAGSD is a really good place to join and come to train your GSD with fun and entertaining ways.

We look forward to next years show where hopefully BAGSD will be asked to come back again and show ‘em how to do it. You never know, your dog could be part of the display, so keep practising.

Newsletter Summer 2009

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Well, we’re finally ready to publish our 3rd edition of the newsletter, which I am sure you will agree is getting bigger with each publication!

It’s been a very busy summer with lots of shows, competitions, displays etc - the results of which are contained within, along with our regular features of new members, (we’re very pleased to report that this time we have not had to say any untimely goodbyes to our beloved pooches so its all good news!), classified section, and one or two season articles.  Plus, of course, what has now become a regular addition - our Progress Day Judges Tips which this time covers both Novice and Beginner categories, and has been written by our Chairperson, Peggy Godley - a very big thanks to you Peggy for this.

So, read it here and enjoy - and we would welcome any comments or feedback from you when you have had chance to absorb it all!

And finally - this coming Sunday is our annual Open Obedience Show (4th October), which as the feature in the newsletter drives home, is our main fund raising event of this year and the success of this is the main reason that we can afford to keep our costs at such a manageable level for all members throughout the year.  We are still appealing for help on the day; its not too late to volunteer, and we would be most grateful for your time, no matter how little you can spare.  Please do let us know if you can help in any way after you have read the feature which contains more detail.

See you all at the show hopefully!
Rebecca

Training 20/09/09

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Afternoon everyone; you may recall an email I sent a few weeks back regarding what was the upcoming Progress Day (last weekend now).  Within this email I alluded to the possiblity that there may not be any training on 20th September as well due to an event which is being held.

Whilst this event is still to go ahead, WE WILL BE HOLDING TRAINING CLASSES AS USUAL.  All participants will be pulled out of the classes to compete, so minimum disruption to regular training will occur.

We therefore look forward to seeing as many of you as possible tomorrow!

Open Obedience Show

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Our Annual Open Obedience Show will be held on Sunday, 4th October 2009, here at Bradley Mills Cricket & Bowling Club.

All breeds of dogs travel from all over the country to compete and this is our main fundraising event of the year!  We depend on the revenue raised at this show to keep your club running all year for your dogs. You may not realise how much is costs in payments for use of the field, trophies, rosettes, equipment and all the other things the club needs to run. The Instructors do their job voluntarily but the other costs are huge. The show provides the money to keep our weekly fees low and enables us to run the club.

We hope you will come to watch and enjoy seeing the dogs work, but we also hope that as many of you as possible will come and help on this very busy and important day. We really do need your help to make this event a success.

If you are available to help in any of the areas listed below, please advise Rebecca, Colin, Peggy, Dawn, Dave or myself as soon as possible. Free refreshments for all helpers will be provided throughout the day. You do not need any experience, just a willingness to support your club.

We urgently need helpers in the following areas. Even if you can only help for a couple of hours it will be much appreciated.
•    Car parking from 7.45am
•    Refreshments – all day
•    Raffle – all day
•    Stay Steward: 11am-1pm & 2pm - 3.15pm

A raffle & cake stall will be featured on the day, so any suitable prizes or donations will be very much appreciated.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to ask.

Many Thanks
Lynne Blair
Show Secretary

Summer Progress Day

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

And so it came to pass that our Summer Progress Day was eventually held after a disappointing delay from its original date in  July.  The weather still held fine for the day and there was a very pleasing turn out from our troops, who all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the day - whatever results their pooches turned in.  Our Agility categories and Breed classes have both grown quite remarkably in size and the attendance on Sunday very clearly demonstrated this.

We hope that you are finding our Judges Tips contained within the newsletter and posted to our website for each Progress Day category useful…. our next edition due very soon will contain Beginner and Novice.  But it is also worth reminding you all that however fantastic your dogs perform in the weekly class, its not unusual for them to not perform on the day; leaving you wondering what on earth went wrong???  What did you do differently???  Why did they/didnt they do this???  There is no scientific answer I’m afraid; you simply have to accept that they have off days just like we do.  And sometimes just the sheer excitement and different atmosphere can put your dog off its usual stride. So dont despair if you think you havent come out of this as well as  you had hoped, its more important that your dog behaves for you in every day life than it is in the ring.  And there’s always March 2010 for another go!!!!

Results will be posted here after the presentations are made on 13/09/09….. please check back soon!

Upcoming dates…

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

As the year moves on at a pace, your club is coming to the end of its scheduled events, and I thought I would take this opportunity to remind you of the few remaining dates and encourage as many of you as possible to attend each of them, and where possible, offer any assistance or support that you can.  This doesnt have to be in the shape of ‘hands-on’ help on the day (although this is massively appreciated), but may we also remind you that contributions to our raffle prizes, home baked goodies for selling on etc also play an important part in raising funds for your club.

The biggest fund raising event of our year looms on the 4th October in the shape of our Open Obedience Show and further details of this will be provided in due course via email and on the website.

But before this, we have our final Progress Day this coming Sunday (6th September) and the long awaited return of the Phil Denton Trophy Event on 20th September.  Training classes will therefore not take place this coming Sunday, and are unlikely to take place on 20th, but we will confirm this as soon as we have the final numbers in for the event.  Again, full details of each day are on the website and displayed in the club house windows for anyone who may be interested in registering and participating in either event.

If anyone has any queries regarding these dates I will be more than happy to answer them if you drop me a line or two.  Otherwise, we hope that as many of you as possible will support your club and attend these final events of the calendar year, to help secure their future in the next year.

See you Sunday!
Rebecca
