Breed Training at Huddersfield BAGSD
Recently, organisation of BAGSD Breed Training Class at Huddersfield has been taken over by Chief Trainer Nick Koskinas. Nick came to the UK from Greece in 1993 and has been successfully showing and breeding GSD’s since then. Since 1996 his ‘Kieztamarx’ Kennel has produced many Championship Show winners with the two most notable being his ‘Arcos Eros von Kieztamarx’ and ‘Kieztamarx Buffoin’. Nick qualified with his BIPDT Instructors certificate in 1993 and has wide experience of training the breed.
Nick’s mission for the Huddersfield BAGSD Breed Training Class is simple – that it should be the best GSD training club in the Northern Region and that every dog who attends should fulfil their full potential in the show ring. His dedication and perseverance with all dogs will ensure this happens.
Training starts with puppies from around four months old and initially concentrates on socialisation and gentle handling. Before starting it is recommended that puppies are fully vaccinated, have as wide socialisation experiences as possible with people and other dogs and animals and should have started on some very basic obedience. Great care is taken with puppies and consideration of their teething and bone development with regard to the handling and activity of the dogs.
Dogs are gradually worked through the various requirements of the ring, including the correct stand and presentation, teeth examination and entirety check for males, full body examination by the judge, temperament test, measurement using the measuring stick, the up and down to check correct front and rear and the gait at various speeds. Nick frequently asks for demonstrations from experienced handlers and allows the opportunity for everyone to take part and go over dogs themselves as he sees the education of the owner and handler as being as important as teaching the dog itself what is required. Advice can be offered on entering shows and up and coming shows as well as help in obtaining a puppy for showing and what to look for in a puppy for newcomers to showing.
Importance is placed on junior handlers who are welcome to attend provided they are members of The Junior Kennel Club as this offers them appropriate insurance whilst handling in classes. Nick considers them to be the future of the fancy and reacts accordingly. Nick is also delighted to accept offers of help from members interested in helping with any aspect of running the classes from ‘making the tea’ to setting up and taking down the floodlights.
Classes are held on a Wednedsday evening from 8pm till 9.30pm at the club grounds at Bradley Mills Cricket and Bowling Club and cost £1 per class. All interested in showing their GSD are made most welcome. Further information can be obtained from Nick on 01924 458203 or by contacting him via email.
